Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry School Visit

In my Technology Education class, we went on a school visit to observe Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry. It is a newer high school in Victoria, that offers a personalized education. This school has been operating for six years and has 85 students attending. It is a private school, but the tuition is more affordable than most private schools. PSI does not want to create more schools, but wants to be a model to other schools and hopefully show them that they can do it too.

At this school, they focus on inquiry-based learning, where students are told they can ask anything. Their inquiry process is to find an initial question then do some research and from that research create a better inquiry question. These inquiries can be anywhere from a week long to a year long. The staff recommends doing three inquiry projects at one time, so students stay engaged and always have something to do. The inquiry process is a lot of build, make, try and experiment, not just research. The students have the opportunity to go work with the community and get hands-on experience. For example, one year a student wanted to learn about boat building, so they worked with a boat builder for one year. I think this is a really cool idea and allows the students to get a good hands-on experience, which is valuable to find your interests.

The learning design is much different than most high schools. They do not test at this school, they put learning in the student’s hands and their success is based on their engagement. The learning environment is meant for the students to succeed, they want there to be a joy in learning for the students. The students build there own daily schedules to be what they want to be working on and can include breaks to go get some exercise etc. A tablet is used to sign in and out that says where they are going and when they will be back. This allows students the freedom to leave when they want to better their learning process. They still have report cards, as it is needed to go onto university or college, so the teachers meet three times a year to put students inquiries into courses – subjects are integrated within each other and their inquiry questions. I personally have never been to a school like this. It was a very cool experience to get to go observe it and it gave me, as an aspiring teacher, a different way of looking at learning. I really like how PSI puts learning in the student’s hands and allows them to research topics they want to know more about. I think this ensures the student’s engagement into school and is of value to them in their future. I am happy I got to experience this school as it gave me a lot of ideas that I could implement in my classroom to create an effective and engaging learning environment.

Week 2 – Dairy

B88352789Z.1_20180905130420_000_GBLAIK0P.3-0_Super_Portrait.jpg

Dairy is one food in particular that has been pretty controversial if it is good for you or bad for you. Milk specifically has many alternatives, such as almond milk, cashew milk, and coconut milk for those who do cut dairy out of their diet.

So what is the effect of cutting out dairy?                                                                                         There a few negative effects that dairy can cause on one’s body. If you do cut out dairy you may feel less bloated, and less gassy. Your skin will be clearer and you will have fewer breakouts. If you are prone to headaches taking out dairy can reduce your headaches. Cutting out dairy also can result in weight loss, however, if that is your goal this is not the best way to accomplish weight loss. Lastly, dairy may promote the growth of prostate cancer cells.

What are the benefits of dairy:                                                                                                            Although there are negative effects to eating dairy, there are also many health benefits. The fat and protein in dairy help you feel full and nourished which prevents from snacking and overeating. Dairy contains probiotics, which are very good for you. Dairy is also full of vitamins and nutrients that are essential to us.

Tips on how to maintain dairy in your diet in a healthy way:                                                      If you do not want to cut dairy out, but want to be consuming it in a healthy way, then limit your portions to 2 times a day. Do not cut it out unless you have a sensitivity because you will be missing out on many important vitamins, nutrients, and probiotics. Another tip is to avoid the nonfat and low-fat versions because those take the healthy fat out and add in more sugar and sodium, which are the bigger problems.

Calcium alternatives:                                                                                                                             If you think you have a sensitivity to dairy but still want to be getting a source of calcium, here are a few options, almonds, kale, oranges, broccoli, spinach, tofu, and sesame seeds.

Week 2: Learning how to sort and filter data

After learning the basics of an Excel workbook, I felt confident enough to go a step further. For this week, I decided to learn how to sort and filter data.

Within your Excel workbook, you can filter your data, which means cutting down a large set of data to a smaller set that satisfies certain criteria you specify. To filter your lists, place your cursor within your data table and then go to the data tab and click on the filter option. This will put drop-down arrows beside the heading of each column and from there you can click on the arrow to open up the filter dialogue to choose what you want to filter your data set too. Press ok for the narrowed down list. This is a very useful tool because none of your data will get erased, the original data set is still there it just filters what you want to see. Once you know how to use this feature it is easy to use!

You can also quickly and easily sort through large sets of data. This function can be used to alphabetize lists, order sales number by value, or screen down lists to a smaller amount of items based on criteria you specify. To sort a list you position your cursor in the header cell of the column that you want to sort then you go to the data tab and click the quick sort button and select the cell that you want to organize your list too. After learning how to use this function I inputted some random things into a workbook to see how it works. It is easy to use and is a helpful time-saving tool. In my example (pictured below) I organized the data by genre.

Social Media Concerns/ Usage as an Aspiring Teacher

Social-Media-e1518208936600.pngWith an increase in technology use over the past few years, social media has become more and more popular. Sites such as Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Snapchat are all being used for creating and sharing ideas/content and for communication. With the popularity of these websites come many safety and privacy concerns, which many people are unaware of.

In our Technology Innovation class, we had guest speaker Jesse Miller come in to talk to us about the concerns of social media with kids, social media and the workplace, and the best practices for privacy online.

A few current concerns of social media with kids is how it is continuing to get younger and younger, it makes them feel special, and there is increased affirmations. There has been an increase in the presence of primary aged students on social media platforms. Without proper knowledge of privacy and safety online this can be a huge issue for kids. Another concern is how it makes them feel special, this makes them want to keep using it and keep adding friends etc. Lastly, children see a lot of the positives of social media such as there favorite Youtube stars making tons of money from creating these videos and they think “I can do that too”, which has its pros and cons but it could lead to a decrease in their academic involvement.

Social media use is also related to the workplace. Social media can be used to search up future employers. This is why your privacy and what you post on social media is a big issue. It is important to balance your personal life with your professional expectations. Especially being a teacher, many students will be searching you up so you want to be cautious of what they will find.

One major focus of social media privacy is digital rights. Before posting pictures, videos, etc. you need the consent of anyone who is featured in that photo. As a teacher, it is important to note that if you are taking a picture of your class you need three levels of consent: the students, the parents, and the school. If a student does not want to be featured in the photo you can use image editing to, for example, put an emoji over their face to keep their privacy respected. To keep your own privacy you should be making sure to read the privacy statements of the platforms you are reading so you know what you are signing into and be aware of how you can make your account more private. You need to have an understanding of what the consequences of using these platforms are.

One topic that Jesse talked a bit about was gaming and the world around that. I did not know a lot about gaming as I am not a gamer myself so this was very informative for me. We learned about a streaming service called Twitch where there are live videos of people playing video games that others can join into and watch. I also learned that there are tons of gaming tournaments that go on around the world where the winner can make up to millions of dollars. This is relevant for me as a teacher candidate as elementary children love video games and gaming is very prevalent in their lives.

Overall social media has a very large presence in many peoples lives and needs to be used with caution and understanding. We should be open about these platforms and have open dialogues with employees, co-workers, friends, and family.

Edcamp

What is Edcamp?

Edcamp is a conference driven by the participants and is peer-led. It is free of charge and open to anyone who is interested in the topic, however, it is designed for K-12 educators. The mission of edcamp is to “build and support communities of empowered educators”. Participants can choose a topic of their choice that they are knowledgeable in and want to share their wisdom on or something that they want to learn more about and then topics are voted on. The schedule is flexible and sessions are not planned until the day of the event. This flexibility allows for participants to share their own personal experiences and gives them the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. Edcamp started in 2010 and since that date, throughout the world, there have been over 1000 successful edcamps. These conferences held by edcamp allow for teachers to gain more knowledge on subjects that they aren’t as comfortable with and they gain many good resources to help them in their classrooms. 6sOadhvK_400x400.jpg

In my EDCI 336 – technology innovation course we created our own edcamps within our classroom. Many students suggested topics that they were interested in (including myself) and the class voted on three main ones. From here we got to decide which discussion we wanted to be a part of. I choose the topic of alternative learning environments. Since none of us are educators yet, only studying to be one, we were mainly presenting on our own experiences in elementary and high school. It was interesting to hear everyone’s experiences and how their schools incorporated alternate learning environments. One specific alternate learning environment which we talked a lot about was learning outside. This was an interesting topic and everyone had different views on it. I personally believe that learning outside should become more prevalent in schools as it allows children to clear their heads and get a change of scenery. Learning outside can also be of use when teaching many different subjects (for example science). All in all, I really enjoyed our mini edcamp and would definitely be interested in participating in one in the future. It is a helpful resource to have as a prospective teacher.

Week 1 – Sugar

This weeks topic is going to be about the effect of sugar on one’s body. Sugar has become more and more popular in foods due to the higher percentage of processed foods available.

So, what does sugar do to your body? It has many effects! Sugar is addictive and your body starts to crave it when you eat it a lot. This addictiveness can lead to weight gain because you want to keep eating more and more. Added sugars are empty calories and they increase your hunger and make you want to keep eating, which further leads to weight gain. The tendency of sugar is it gives you a quick energy boost, however, it then causes a big drop in your energy. This can be combatted by pairing something sugary with something containing more protein. Sugar can also lead to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, cavities and poor dental health, premature aging, and an increased chance of depression. If you are eating small amounts of natural sugar, there is no need to worry, but you should try and reduce sugar when you can.

What are the effects of cutting added sugar out of your diet? Cutting sugar out of one’s diet can lead to weight loss, a reduced risk of heart disease, clearer skin, an increase in energy and fewer mood swings. Taking out added sugar allows your taste palette to reform and you begin to taste natural sugars more. Something like an apple or strawberries can act as your dessert for the day when you can taste these natural sugars.

All in all, sugar has many negative effects on your body, however, it is the added sugars you should try and stay away from as much as you can. Natural sugars that are in fruit are high in fiber, vitamins, and water so the negative effects are not the same, however, if your end goal is weight loss you should still be careful of how much natural sugar you are eating.

Week 1: Learning how to enter data – cell and workbook basics

Since I have never used excel before I wanted to start off with the very basics and learn the starting points of the workbook.

Each excel file is called a workbook and you can save, open and close these workbooks. Within a singular workbook, you can create multiple worksheets, which are located at the bottom of the page (shown below). This allows users to have multiple different pages of data within the same workbook.

image3.jpg

A worksheet has a grid that contains rows, columns, and cells (shown below). Rows are along the side and are numbered from 1 onwards, and columns are along the top and labeled by letters starting with A. Where a row and a column intersect is the cell. A cell is referred to by its address – a combination of the column letter and the row number (ex. H5 – cell lies between row 5 and column G). When you want to start inputting your data, you select a cell to insert it. You can also stretch the columns and rows if you want them to be larger by putting the mouse between the two letters (or numbers) and then clicking and dragging your mouse. This will allow that cell to become larger.

image1.jpg

There is also something known as the range, and the range is a group of cells that are next to each other and all together. A range can also be named. It is named by naming the cell in the upper left corner through to the cell in the bottom right corner (ex. L7: N12 – shows a range of cell through L7 to N12).

The research I have done on the basics of the workbook has allowed me to start to gain an understanding of how the program works and knowing the correct terms will be helpful in my weeks to come.

Tech Tool Review – Google Apps for Education (GAFE)

Google Apps for Education (GAFE) also called G Suite is a tool available for teachers and schools for free. It allows people to collaborate and communicate with their peers, teachers, and colleagues. These apps include Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs and Sites.

Some ways that Google apps are being used in schools are to easily manage your classroom by creating classes, distributing assignments or quizzes, giving feedback to students and having everything organized in one place. It is simple to operate and you can manage it with confidence. Students and teachers can collaborate anywhere and anytime by co-editing documents and presentations.  Another way it can be used is to compose to-do lists, set task reminders, and to organize your schedule. Google apps enables you to communicate in many different ways, such as email, chat, video conference or you can even create your own website. The reasons why educators choose to use GAFE is because it is easy, affordable, versatile and impactful. The only downside to using Google apps is that it is absolutely necessary to have access to a device, which often some kids don’t.

The tool website is: https://edu.google.com/intl/en_ca/k-12-solutions/g-suite/?modal_active=none

We already use numerous Google apps, therefore we would both consider using it in our classrooms.

GAFE is widely tweeted about and discussed on almost every social media platform.

Learning goals for my open inquiry

The goal of my open inquiry/passion project is to explore a topic that has always been of interest to me, but I have never taken the time to research and find out more about. Something I have always wanted to learn more about is healthy eating and nutrition. This inquiry project is the perfect opportunity for me to research more information on this topic. With healthy eating becoming more mainstream there have been many new diets introduced and I am interested to see if these new diets are really good for you, or if they have just become more of a fad. I am also going to research the effects of cutting out certain food groups from your diet. I have created a schedule of what I will be talking about each week.

Week 1: Effects of cutting out artificial sugar / what artificial sugar does to your body

Week 2: Effect of cutting out dairy / what dairy does to your body (good or bad)

Week 3: Effect of cutting out alcohol / what it does to your body

Week 4: Effect of cutting out sodium / what it does to your body

Week 5: Effect of cutting out gluten / what it does to your body

Week 6: Are juice cleanses good or bad for your diet?

Week 7: Is going vegan a healthy choice for your diet?

Week 8: Is the keto diet a healthy choice?

Week 9: Is intermittent fasting a healthy diet choice?

Week 10: Reflect back on the research I have done and create a one-week meal plan for myself from what I have learned

To help me create my schedule and organize it effectively I used an app called trello (shown below), which is a project management website that allows you to create lists for your inquiry topic, your to do, your doing, and your done. It is extremely helpful and easy to use!

Stay tuned for information regarding these topics 🙂

Learning goals for my tech inquiry

The goal of my tech inquiry is to learn something new to do with technology that can be of use to me as a student and a teacher. I have decided to learn how to use excel. Excel is a very prominent web tool used in many jobs and is an asset to have when looking for work. Excel has many features that are very helpful for budgeting, scheduling and making charts. I believe it is something that will come into use in my life and that it will be very beneficial to learn how to use it. I have created a schedule of what I am going to learn over the next couple months.

Week 1: Learn how to enter data – cell and workbook basics

Week 2: Learn how to sort and filter data (alphabetize lists)

Week 3: Learn how the formulas work

Week 4: Create my own budget spreadsheet

Week 5: Learn how to insert tables and use them

Week 6: Learn the charting function – how to make charts

Week 7: Learn the calendar function

Week 8: Learn the pros vs. cons function

Week 9: Create my own list of pros and cons of using excel

Week 10: Review everything I have learned and reflect on it

I used a web app called trello to help me organize my schedule. Trello is a project management app that allows you to create lists of your inquiry project/question, what you plan to do, what you are currently doing, and what you’ve done. It is very helpful and anyone can use it. Screen Shot 2018-09-27 at 4.00.38 PM.png

Stay tuned to see more about my experience learning excel and to find some useful tools if you want to learn as well 🙂
